Glasgow School of Art

Bruce was commissioned in 2003 to produce six new chairs for the Director’s Room at the Glasgow School of Art. The originals had been in daily use since 1904 and were showing the signs of wear and tear.

In 2007 Bruce was then asked to produce a replica of the Board Room Chair for approval and subsequently he received the order of twelve Board Room Chairs to replace the originals. It was decided to protect the original chairs within the Mackintosh museum. It is the first time Mackintosh furniture has been replaced at the Art School, a commission that Bruce is very proud of.

The six Director’s Room Chairs the Board Room Chairs were given an individual identification number, subsequent commissions for either of these chairs are numbered incrementally.

Glasgow School of Art Boardroom Chair

In 2007 Bruce received a further commission to produce a replica of the Board Room Chair for approval and subsequently he received the order of twelve Board Room Chairs to replace the originals. As with the previous directors chairs commission in the polishing process the chairs were aged to match the wood work and fixtures in the Board Room at the Art School.

The original Directors and Board Room chairs were taken out of use and protected, they are now use as exhibition pieces and have been lent to many galleries around the world.

Glasgow School of Art Library Chair

As part of the refurbishment of the Art School after the fire in 2014 which destroyed the Library and the west of the building, Bruce was commissioned to produce a reproduction of the original Library chair for possible reinstatement in the new library. Sadly as the restoration of the building was nearing completion it suffered a second catastrophic fire which has put the project on hold.

The granting of this commission, as well as the directors room and boardroom chairs from the Glasgow School of Art over the years, is an acknowledgement of Bruce’s experience, skills and trust to produce such important reproductions of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s furniture.

As part of the interiors of Miss Cranston’s home Hous’hill, Mackintosh designed this chair for the suite in the White Bedroom. Four subsequent reproductions were made for Miss Cranston’s decorator William Douglas. Two of these chairs are on display at the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow. My first Hous’hill bedroom chair was commissioned by a client in Germany, the chair featured above is in my own collection.

Baskett-Lowke Arm Chair

This chair was not made in Mackintoshes  life time, but it is recorded that Mackintosh must of been proud of the design due to the care and detail put into the drawing. It is thought that it was a proposal for Bassett-Lowke’s dining suite or possibly Mackintosh might of proposed it as furniture for the ‘Dug-Out’ – a later addition at the Willow tearooms, and probably his last work in Glasgow.
